The Wednesday Word Scripture & Prayer resource is unique. It:
Is a weekly resource offered free of charge by The Wednesday Word Trust — a not-for-profit Catholic charity — and endorsed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, the Catholic Education Service and hundreds of Catholic primary schools across the UK.
Carries an imprimatur, certifying it to be free from moral or doctrinal error — supporting primary schools in meeting inspection frameworks. It is widely recognised for assisting Catholic schools in fulfilling the aims of Section 48 (CSI) and Ofsted’s expectations for spiritual, moral and social development, while also aligning with recommendations in the new Prayer & Liturgy Directory.
Complements and supports the RE already provided in schools and has minimal impact on school administration — distribution and implementation are simple, making it perfect for teacher- or pupil-led class prayer or assemblies.
Upholds and enhances your school’s Catholic identity, promoting the Catholic life of your school and parish in a warm and friendly manner – giving tremendous expression to the school’s Catholic mission.
Helps parents in their role as primary educators to teach their children about the virtues and values at the heart of the Gospel. The Wednesday Word creates a simple way to engage with the Gospel and teachings of the Catholic Church for both churched and unchurched families alike.
Is based in evangelisation and aims to draw families closer to God and to one another while fostering a new relationship between the Church and the typically more than 80% of school parents who, according to national statistics, do not currently appear to be practising or enquiring about the Catholic faith.
Creates a positive weekly contact with school families by sharing the joy of the Gospel with all school parents, regardless of any professed faith or lack of it, whilst also acting as a regular, gentle, indirect invitation to the Church throughout the time that the family is connected to the school.
Seeks to encourage family dialogue – a special weekly Family Time to explore Jesus’ teachings in the Gospel together. A weekly Word, inspired by the coming Sunday’s Gospel, is suggested as a simple and supportive starting point for Family Time, helping to avoid awkwardness in the many families where the tradition of coming together in prayer and reflection appears to have lapsed or never existed.
Is based on the Parable of the Sower and the Seed and aims to enrich the family through their encounter with Christ – through His Word.
Is a Catholic midweek mission and meditation for our time, created to share the Gospel and bring glory to God — but it needs your support. Come and share in the joy of The Wednesday Word — it truly is Good News for Everyone!

“The materials produced are already used extensively throughout the dioceses in England and Wales - bringing remarkable graces to many. I offer my prayers and encouragement not only to those who provide The Wednesday Word but also to those who use it.”
